What is a fringe festival?

A fringe festival is an open access arts festival that celebrates grassroots, experimental and independent performances. Originating from the 1947 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, fringe festivals allow artists to bypass traditional curation, offering diverse performances—including theatre, comedy, dance, and cabaret—in a low-cost, accessible format.

Fringe festivals typically support independent work you don’t find in the mainstream, prioritising accessibility, affordability and diversity, and creating pathways for emerging and independent artists.

Fringe is where new ideas are tested, risks are taken, and artists make work on their own terms.

Why be part of Desert Fringe 2026?

Desert Fringe is your opportunity to:

  • Present your work as part of a multi-arts festival in Mparntwe (Alice Springs)

  • Connect with other artists, venues and collaborators

  • Be part of the wider Australian fringe network

  • Build your profile with local and visiting audiences

  • Access free artist development workshops

  • Test new ideas or develop existing work in a supportive environment

Registration Fees

There are no registration fees for Desert Fringe Festival 2026. Registration normally carries a fee to support festival administration and artist services. For 2026, Red Hot Arts has covered the cost of registration while the Open Access model continues to develop.

The standard registration fee would otherwise be $80 per registration. Fees may be introduced in the future as the festival grows.
