The Buffel Harvest

From artist and researcher Dean West, The Buffel Harvest is an experimental performance orbiting around a live demonstration of how to grow Oyster Mushrooms using Central Australian weed species Buffel Grass as a substrate. The demonstration will take you through harvest, pasteurisation, inoculation, incubation and finally harvest again.

The demonstration will be elaborated with animations, theoretical text, and a sonic score composed by Luiz Gubessi and Jon Rose. “Buffel grass is arguably the single biggest invasive species threat to biodiversity across the entire Australian arid zone”

We believe new imaginaries are needed to tackle this problem that is both so vast and so close to home. Our aim is to empower our audiences with new tools to navigate this environmental disaster.
